Fragments from the Waters Above

Certain Reflections upon Desert Glass and Other Relics of a Less Stable World
Written in a tent somewhere west of the Egyptian frontier, during an excessively hot season in Libya.

There are moments in one's life when Providence, having exhausted all subtle methods of instruction, finally hurls an entire metaphysical problem directly at one's boots.
Such was my introduction to Libyan Desert Glass.
I had gone to Libya, initially, for reasons so harmlessly antiquarian that even Oxford approved of them — which, in retrospect, ought perhaps to have warned me that something dreadful was about to occur. My declared intention was merely to examine certain medieval caravan routes across the Great Sand Sea and investigate a handful of obscure Arabic references to what one mysterious Old -Mercian-dialect manuscript called "the yellow stones of the burned desert."
I anticipated, at most, a pleasant season of tea-drinking beneath striped tents, several arguments with German archaeologists dressed like bankrupt entomologists, and perhaps the acquisition of a questionable astrolabe from a man named Yusuf who swore upon three separate prophets that it had belonged to a lost astronomer of Córdoba. Instead, somewhere west of the Egyptian frontier, a Tuareg guide stooped silently, retrieved from the sand a fragment of Libyan Desert Glass glowing like frozen minster light, and placed it into my hand with the grave composure of a priest delivering a relic. From that moment onward, the expedition ceased to be archaeological and became cosmological almost against my will; for the further I wandered among those glittering wastes, the less the desert resembled geology and the more it resembled aftermath.
Indeed, I had been riding for several days through that magnificent emptiness called the Great Sand Sea—a name so wonderfully theatrical that one suspects the Almighty Himself may have coined it after dinner—when one of the Berber guys accompanying me dismounted, crouched silently, and retrieved from the sand a small yellow object which glittered in the evening light like a frozen drop of cathedral sunlight.
He handed it to me without ceremony.
I assumed, naturally, that it was some vulgar trinket dropped by German archaeologists. One meets them everywhere in North Africa, usually half-buried in excavation pits and speaking with enormous confidence about things they discovered approximately six minutes earlier.
But this object was different.
It was warm from the sun.Translucent.Honey-coloured.Almost unnaturally pure.
A fragment of the heavens.
Or so it seemed.
The scientific world calls it Libyan Desert Glass, which is a very dry and bureaucratic title for something that looks as though an archangel had accidentally smashed a chandelier over the Sahara.
The accepted, standard explanation is that it formed through extraordinary heat generated either by a meteor impact or some sort of atmospheric detonation. This explanation is presented with the triumphant certainty peculiar to modern scientists—that delightful confidence which allows a man to speak dogmatically about events supposedly occurring twenty-eight million years ago whilst remaining unable to locate his own umbrella.
Still, I listened politely.
One must always listen politely to geologists.It encourages them.
According to the official theory, some celestial object entered the atmosphere above the Sahara, generated temperatures so monstrous that entire surfaces of silica-rich sand liquefied instantly into glass, and scattered the resulting material across hundreds of square kilometres.
Very well.
But the difficulty is not that this explanation is impossible.
The difficulty is that it explains far too little.
For once one begins studying these phenomena, one discovers that Libya is not alone.
The earth appears littered with broken celestial glass.
Not metaphorically.Literally.
There exists Atacama Desert Glass in Chile: twisted black-green masses scattered across the Atacama Desert like burnt seaweed from another planet. Modern investigators propose that these formed during a cometary airburst whose thermal radiation was sufficient to melt the desert floor itself.
Imagine that sentence calmly delivered over conference biscuits.
"The desert floor melted."
As though one were discussing marmalade.
The photographs of Atacama glass are especially unsettling because the material appears folded, curled, and twisted upward, almost as though the earth attempted momentarily to escape gravity before reconsidering.
Then there is Darwin Glass in Tasmania, associated with Darwin Crater: black impact glass formed through extraordinary temperatures and violent dispersion.
Then Edeowie Glass in South Australia, equally mysterious and equally inconvenient to the comforting doctrine that nature proceeds at the leisurely pace of a pensioned librarian.
And then, perhaps strangest of all, there is Hypatia.
Hypatia is one of those objects which causes scientists to become simultaneously ecstatic and defensive—a condition rather like watching a clergyman discover whisky during Lent.
Found in Egypt, the stone possesses bizarre chemical characteristics:
microdiamonds,
unusual isotopic compositions,
and structures so anomalous that several researchers suggested it may predate the Solar System itself.
Predate the Solar System!
Observe how magnificently modern materialists speak when sufficiently alarmed.
The same men who laugh at Genesis without reading it will, without embarrassment, inform you that a pebble may be older than the Sun.
One cannot help admiring the athleticism.
And then, naturally, there are Tektites: strange glassy objects found all across the world, allegedly formed when meteor impacts eject molten terrestrial material into the atmosphere, from which it later rains back down upon the earth.
This theory requires the planet to have suffered an astonishing number of colossal impacts.
Yet the same scholars proposing this scenario will often dismiss the Flood narrative as "too catastrophic."
One occasionally wonders whether irony itself died sometime during the twentieth century.
And finally there stands the magnificent and terrible Tunguska event.
Now Tunguska fascinates me because it occurred recently enough that modern civilisation was forced to witness catastrophe directly rather than burying it beneath geological jargon.
In 1908 something entered the atmosphere over Siberia and exploded with such force that forests over thousands of square kilometres were flattened outward radially.
No conventional crater. No volcano. No artillery. No industrial accident.
Simply: light, heat, shock, fire from above.
The eyewitness accounts are gloriously Biblical.
Flaming heavens.
Burning skies.
Atmospheric concussion.
Terrified populations.
If such an event had occurred in the Bronze Age, modern historians would classify the resulting chronicles as "mythological embellishment."
This is one of academia's great amusements:when ancient men describe impossible celestial phenomena, they are primitive fabulists;when modern physicists describe impossible celestial phenomena, they receive grants.
Now, after several months wandering through Libya with these matters in mind, I arrived at a deeply uncomfortable conclusion.
All these phenomena possess not merely geological similarities, but liturgical ones.
That is the important word:liturgical.
They resemble one another symbolically.
Always:
descent from above,
sudden heat,
light,
rupture,
glass,
devastation,
fragmentation.
Again and again the heavens appear not as passive scenery, but as active machinery.
This disturbed me profoundly because I had spent much of my youth dutifully accepting the modern assumption that ancient cosmologies were merely poetic misunderstandings invented by men too ignorant to own telescopes.
Yet the further one travels from Bloomsbury drawing rooms and university committees, the less convincing modern smugness becomes.
The ancients repeatedly described:
waters above,
firmaments,
windows of heaven,
falling stars,
vaults,
domes,
celestial ruptures.
It is scarcely conceivable that every soul among them was born a poet.
Naturally, modern scholars insist all such language is metaphorical.
Curiously, however, they reserve this scepticism exclusively for Scripture.
When an astrophysicist speaks of "dark matter," "cosmic inflation," or "quantum foam," everybody nods gravely despite understanding approximately none of it.
But once Moses mentions the "windows of heaven," suddenly the entire academy becomes aggressively literal-minded.
It is difficult not to suspect professional jealousy.
Now let me state my theory plainly.
I propose that these glasses and celestial vitrifications may represent remnants of a partially shattered antediluvian firmament.
There.
The sentence has escaped.
I can already hear several professors collapsing into decorative convulsions.
Yet before one dismisses the idea entirely, one should consider certain awkward facts.
The ancient Hebrew conception of the cosmos described waters separated by a firmament above the earth.
Modern readers instinctively picture this as primitive nonsense because they have been trained from infancy to regard pre-modern man as a sort of articulate chimpanzee.
But suppose the ancients were attempting to describe a genuine atmospheric or celestial structure using observational language?
Suppose early humanity witnessed:high siliceous atmospheric strata,crystalline particulate canopies,electrical plasma layers,or mineralised atmospheric envelopes unknown to modern conditions?
And suppose that during the Flood this structure destabilised catastrophically?
Scripture states:
"The fountains of the great deep burst forth, and the windows of heaven were opened."
What an extraordinary phrase:
Windows of heaven.
Not clouds.
Not rain merely.
Windows.
Architectural language.
Structural language.
Language suggesting rupture.
Now imagine such a rupture on a planetary scale.
The descent of siliceous or mineralised atmospheric material through unimaginable thermal and electrical processes could produce precisely the sort of vitrifications observed across multiple continents.
Deserts would become furnaces.Sand would liquefy.Glass would rain across landscapes.Atmospheric detonations would occur.Fragments would disperse globally.
And what would later civilisations remember?
Not plasma physics.
Not atmospheric chemistry.
Not astrophysical modelling.
They would remember:the heavens breaking.
Which, incidentally, is exactly what they reported.
The longer I remained in Libya, wandering among those immense and almost ecclesiastically silent seas of sand, the more I found myself haunted by the peculiar recurrence of vitrified catastrophe across the world.
Everywhere the pattern repeats itself with almost liturgical stubbornness: extraordinary heat, atmospheric violence, silica transformed into glass, debris strewn across deserts, and evidence—whether admitted reluctantly or otherwise—of some terrible intrusion from the heavens.
Modern geology insists upon treating each occurrence as an isolated event, which strikes me as rather like insisting each wave in a storm is unrelated merely because one has numbered them separately in a textbook.
More curious still is the fact that several of these phenomena lack entirely satisfactory
craters, or appear more atmospheric than terrestrial in nature, as with the Tunguska event.
The modern geologist now speaks quite calmly of forests annihilated by celestial detonations, deserts liquefied by thermal radiation, and extraterrestrial debris raining from the heavens, whilst continuing—through an intellectual feat bordering upon the acrobatic—to regard ancient catastrophe narratives as primitive superstition.
It was this contradiction that finally led me toward a possibility so alarming that my colleagues immediately declared it impossible, which naturally encouraged me enormously.
I began to suspect that these glasses and vitrifications may represent not merely impact residue, but fragments of a partially shattered antediluvian firmament: relics, perhaps, of some primordial celestial structure broken during the great catastrophe remembered dimly in nearly every ancient tradition on Earth.
Scripture speaks of the "windows of heaven" opening during the Flood—a phrase modern theologians hasten to dilute into metaphor because it makes them uncomfortable at dinner parties—yet I cannot help noticing that windows are architectural things. They imply structure, rupture, and violent opening.
Across civilizations one repeatedly encounters traditions of falling stars, burning skies, celestial collapse, sacred stones, floods, darkness, and fire descending from above. The materialist scholar assures us these similarities are coincidental products of the primitive imagination, which I find touching in the same way one finds a child's confidence touching.
For the modern world has not abolished apocalypse at all; it has merely transferred it into scientific language. The same men who mock Genesis without reading it now lecture us earnestly about cometary airbursts, extinction-level impacts, atmospheric collapse, and stones older than the Solar System falling through the heavens.
In short, contemporary materialism appears increasingly to believe in catastrophe with extraordinary devotion, provided one refrains from calling it judgement and accompanies it instead with diagrams, grants, and sufficiently joyless vocabulary.
And I should note, lest some particularly agitated reader accuse me of attempting to compress all catastrophe into the single convulsion of the Flood, that the ancient world appears to preserve memories not merely of one celestial judgement, but of several lesser ruptures occurring afterward like lingering cracks spreading through damaged masonry. In this respect, the case of Sodom and Gomorrah becomes profoundly interesting. For these cities belong not to the antediluvian world, but to the generations following Noah, during the age of Abraham.
Yet the mode of their destruction bears a disturbingly familiar character.
Scripture states that "the Lord rained upon Sodom and upon Gomorrah brimstone and fire from the Lord out of heaven," which modern theologians generally explain with the embarrassed haste of men attempting to usher difficult relatives away from respectable company.
Yet what precisely is being described?
Again one encounters atmospheric devastation, thermal annihilation descending from above, fire associated with judgement, and the sudden sterilisation of an entire landscape.
The region surrounding the Dead Sea remains geologically strange even now: rich in bitumen, sulphur, salt, seismic instability, and evidence of ancient violent upheaval.
Modern investigators, with that exquisite reluctance characteristic of our age, have even proposed possibilities involving airbursts or cosmic detonations over Bronze Age settlements in the region — that is to say, they have cautiously reinvented brimstone from heaven whilst refusing on professional grounds to call it brimstone.
What interests me is not whether every detail of Genesis can be translated neatly into the vocabulary of astrophysics, but rather the extraordinary consistency of the pattern itself.
Again and again mankind remembers catastrophe as something descending: fire from heaven, burning skies, exploding air, poisoned landscapes, darkness, ash, vitrification, annihilation.
The modern mind insists these are disconnected legends embroidered by primitive fear; yet modern science increasingly describes the history of Earth itself as a sequence of atmospheric violences and celestial intrusions sufficiently terrible to have terrified any civilisation fortunate enough to survive them.
Thus Sodom and Gomorrah stand, in my estimation, not as isolated moral fables awkwardly stranded in sacred literature, but as post-diluvian echoes of the same unstable cosmos — reminders that even after the Flood, the heavens may not yet have entirely ceased breaking.
At this point my distinguished colleague Professor Harold Bentwick of Cambridge informed me over luncheon that my theory was:
"a reckless confusion of mythology and mineralogy."
I congratulated him immediately on the alliteration.
One must encourage small victories where possible.
I then asked whether he believed meteor impacts capable of liquefying entire deserts.
"Yes," he replied.
"And atmospheric explosions capable of flattening forests?"
"Certainly."
"And cometary thermal radiation capable of melting terrestrial surfaces?"
"Quite plausible."
"So," I said, "your objection is not to catastrophic fire descending from heaven, but merely to the Hebrew vocabulary describing it."
He became very interested in his soup thereafter.
Another critic, Dr. Emil Kräusen of Heidelberg, insisted there exists:
"no scientific evidence whatsoever for a literal firmament."
This statement sounds impressive until one notices that science routinely discovers invisible structures after denying them for centuries.
Human history is largely a catalogue of educated men announcing:"There is no evidence for that,"immediately before discovering it.
No evidence for germs. No evidence for meteorites. No evidence for continental drift. No evidence for stones falling from the sky.
Indeed, the French Academy once declared meteorites impossible because:"stones cannot fall from heaven, as there are no stones in heaven."
One hardly knows whether to laugh or frame the sentence in gold.
Modern intellectual arrogance is especially amusing because it ages so rapidly.
A professor may spend thirty years mocking Biblical cosmology only for a balloon telescope to arrive and ruin his career over breakfast.
Then came Professor Lydia Harcourt, an evolutionary geologist whose primary hobby appears to be extending chronology until it reaches theological safety.
She objected that my proposal:
"would disrupt accepted uniformitarian models."
Precisely.
Uniformitarianism—the doctrine that geological change occurs slowly and gradually over immense periods—has always struck me as less a scientific conclusion than an emotional support animal for atheism.
The theory emerged largely because eighteenth- and nineteenth-century intellectuals wished desperately to escape the terrifying immediacy of Genesis.
If the earth formed slowly enough,then perhaps judgement never occurred.If mountains rose gradually enough,then perhaps catastrophe was never moral.If enough millions of years are inserted between events,God Himself becomes comfortably vague.
Deep time is not merely geology.
It is theology with a ruler.
And yet modern geology increasingly betrays its own foundations.
Every decade introduces fresh catastrophes:
extinction events,
megafloods,
supervolcanoes,
impact winters,
crustal upheavals,
airburst detonations.
The earth, apparently, has been behaving rather more like the Book of Revelation than Victorian gentlemen anticipated.
One now encounters the remarkable spectacle of scientists proposing apocalyptic events with one side of the mouth whilst denying apocalypse with the other.
I once remarked to Professor Harcourt that modern geology resembles a man discovering tiger tracks throughout his house whilst continuing to insist there are no tigers because the carpet remains statistically intact.
She did not invite me back to Cambridge.
Still, the deeper issue here is not geology.
It is cosmology.
The modern world has committed itself absolutely to the doctrine that ancient man understood nothing and modern man understands nearly everything.
This is plainly absurd.
Ancient civilisation produced:the pyramids,Roman concrete,Gothic cathedrals,Byzantine engineering,astronomical alignments,epics,laws,liturgies,and philosophies of astonishing sophistication.
Yet we are asked to believe these same peoples gazed upward nightly and hallucinated the heavens entirely.
It is an oddly selective stupidity.
The truth is that ancient cosmology may preserve observational memories modern civilisation has forgotten precisely because modernity became too abstract to notice reality directly.
A shepherd staring at the heavens nightly for fifty years may observe things invisible to a bureaucrat reading astrophysics journals beneath fluorescent lighting.
And there, perhaps, lies the great comedy.
Modern intellectuals imagine themselves liberated from myth whilst living entirely inside one.
For materialism itself is a mythology:
complete with creation stories,
priesthoods,
taboos,
heresies,
approved vocabularies,
and excommunications.
Only the robes have changed.
The medieval Church threatened inconvenient thinkers with accusations of heresy.
Modern academia threatens them with peer review.
The mechanism is identical;only the coffee worsened.
Meanwhile the Libyan desert remains magnificently indifferent.
Night after night I sat beside the dunes holding fragments of desert glass beneath the
stars.
The moonlight passing through those yellow stones is extraordinary.They glow softly, almost internally, as though retaining some memory of the whammy that birthed them.
One begins to understand why ancient peoples attributed sacred significance to such objects.
For they do not feel terrestrial.
They feel interrupted.
And perhaps that is precisely what they are:interruptions in ordinary reality.
Evidence that the barrier between heaven and earth was once less stable than we suppose.
The modern world fears this possibility because it restores drama to existence.
If the heavens can rupture,then history possesses direction.If catastrophe can descend morally as well as physically,then civilisation itself becomes accountable.If Genesis preserves even distorted memories of genuine cosmic trauma,then Scripture ceases to be merely inspirational literature.
It becomes testimony.
And testimony is far more dangerous.
For one can ignore poetry.
One cannot comfortably ignore witnesses.
Thus the contemporary academy performs astonishing intellectual acrobatics to avoid the obvious symbolic continuity between:ancient flood traditions,celestial rupture myths,worldwide catastrophe narratives,and geological evidence of extraordinary thermal events.
Every civilisation remembers destruction from above.
Every civilisation remembers fire,flood,darkened skies,falling stars,or broken heavens.
The materialist explanation for this universal pattern is that human beings coincidentally invented identical stories independently because they were frightened of thunderstorms.
This theory, naturally, is considered rigorous scholarship.
Whereas my suggestion—that humanity may be remembering something real—is considered eccentric.
Such are the standards of our age.
Still, I bear no hostility toward my scientific colleagues.
Indeed, I cherish them enormously.Without them one would never fully appreciate comedy.
There is something wonderfully theatrical about watching a man solemnly insist that:
deserts were liquefied by cosmic explosions, forests annihilated by atmospheric fireballs, continents repeatedly devastated by extinction-level catastrophes, extraterrestrial stones older than the Solar System continue falling from the heavens—
while simultaneously assuring you that Genesis is "unscientific."
One scarcely requires satire.The thing arrives pre-written.
And so I conclude this essay where I began: in the Libyan sands.
The wind moves softly at dusk across the Great Sand Sea.The horizon burns crimson.The stars emerge slowly overhead.
And beneath one's boots lie scattered fragments of golden glass born through temperatures no ordinary earthly process comfortably explains.
The modern geologist sees impact residue.
The archaeologist sees prehistoric material.
The physicist sees thermal transformation.
Perhaps they are all correct.
But I suspect there is something more.
Something older.
Something remembered imperfectly across myth, Scripture, and shattered stone alike.
For these desert glasses do not resemble ordinary geology.
They resemble aftermath.
And sometimes, late at night beneath the Sahara sky, holding one of those strange yellow fragments against the moonlight, I cannot entirely suppress the dreadful possibility that I am not examining debris from fallen meteors—
—but splinters from the broken windows of Heaven.
